Myth: Neural networks "think" like humans.
In reality, modern neural networks do not possess consciousness, emotions, intentions, or an understanding of the world in the human sense. They calculate the most probable continuation of text or another sequence of data based on statistical patterns learned from training data.[2][3][4] This is precisely why their responses can sound convincing and even "human-like," but this is not a sign of thinking—it's the result of processing patterns and predictions, not internal comprehension.[2][5]
The key difference is that human thinking relies on experience, goals, motivation, memory, bodily perception, and subjective understanding, which models lack. The similarity in dialogues merely creates an imitation of speech and behavior.[3][5][8] Even when AI formulates empathy, apologies, or logical conclusions, it doesn't "experience" them or "decide" like a human—it reproduces probable linguistic patterns, which is why researchers refer to such systems as stochastic parrots.[3][15]
The practical takeaway is simple: neural networks are useful tools for searching, drafting, and generating ideas, but they cannot be considered human interlocutors or bearers of understanding.[1][4][10] Therefore, their responses should be treated as the result of computation that needs to be verified, especially regarding facts, logic, and complex decisions.[15][19]
