Myth: Different AI Models Give the Same Answers to the Same Question
This is a myth because large language models operate probabilistically, not like a deterministic calculator. Even the same question can lead to different text continuations depending on the internal probability distribution, generation parameters, and prompt phrasing.[1] As sources note, minimal syntactic changes in the prompt can shift the model into different areas of its latent space, altering the style, completeness, and even the set of facts in the answer.[1]
Furthermore, different models are trained differently: they vary in architecture, data composition and volume, fine-tuning objectives, and safety settings. Therefore, one model might respond concisely and cautiously, another expansively and confidently, and a third might interpret an ambiguous question differently or prioritize accuracy, usefulness, and creativity in varying ways.[1][2] This is also evident in practice: materials on generative AI explicitly state that the same task can yield different results not only between models but also upon repeated runs of a single model.[1]
It's also important that uniformity of answers is not a sign of quality. For AI, consistency with the meaning of the question, correctness of reasoning, and contextual relevance are more critical than literal repeatability. This is precisely why models are compared in real-world applications not by whether "they say the same thing," but by metrics of accuracy, reliability, and usefulness; even strong systems can show significant differences in results on the same task.[2][6]
